ACROSS INLAND SEAS: Michigan Travel Posters

ACROSS INLAND SEAS: Mackinac Island Sometimes an old idea resurfaces years later. I created a series of tiny thumbnail sketches for a series of Michigan Travel Posters titled "Across Inland Seas" in my Concept Illustration class maybe 5 years ago. I save everything. Looked at the scans of the thumbnail sketches again yesterday and decided it is time to get going on the series. Must have been happy with the sketch because I labeled it with a star.

Sometimes an old idea resurfaces years later. I created a series of tiny thumbnail sketches for a series of Michigan Travel Posters titled "Across Inland Seas" about 5 years ago. I save everything. I looked at the scans of the thumbnail sketches again recently and decided to take several ideas to finish. These two images are the first of several to come.
A tiny sketch for a big idea. This thumbnal as only 1 inche by two inches.

This design was an excercise in the Concept Illustration course I teach at Macomb Community College. The challenge was to graphically merge two contrasting ideas into one unified concept/design. Often students don't want to go the the thumbnail sketch stage which is a mistake. I presented 7 or 8 ideas for this subject. Created in roughly 30 minutes I used the drawings as an example of how quickly you can generate designs with a pencil on paper.

I never throw away my ideas. Years later the concept still interested me so decided recently to to realize it as a finished work. I was glad I did.
The vector art. I added painted texture to each image to warm up the art and give a slightly vintage feel.
